In September 2023, the Ethereum team is launching a new testnet called Holešky, the first POS testnet after the Ethereum merger.

The Ethereum testnet is used by developers to safely test protocol upgrades and smart contracts before deploying them to the main network. It provides a safe environment for testing under conditions similar to the live network.

Previously, Ethereum had two public testnets:

• Sepolia allows developers to test contracts and applications.
• Holesky allows protocol developers to test network upgrades and allows stakers to test running validators.

Named after a train station in Prague, Holesky aims to become larger than the Ethereum mainnet - which means that there should be more validators to operate the new network in the end.

Holesky aims to support at least 1.4 million validators, more than the currently operating Ethereum mainnet (700,000) and Goerli (512,000) combined. In addition to solving some Goerli ETH supply issues, a larger validator set should allow developers and infrastructure providers to run tests under more realistic network conditions.
